Can I keep these fish with Discus bred elsewhere?
Our Opinion - It is a known issue that mixing Discus from different areas of the world can lead to severe bacterial cross contamination issues, commonly known as the "Discus Plague" - For sure some fish keepers do it and have no problems, but likewise others lose all their fish. Being a known issue, the only logical way to 100% avoid it, is not to mix Discus from different sources in the same water. Choose a source and stick with it, or set up a seperate aquarium.
I'm new to Discus, can I buy a couple to see how I get on with them?
Yes but, discus are a shoaling species and thrive in groups. Dither fish tank mates will help the discus feel secure, be sure to select fish that can tolerate the higher temperatures and won't fit in the discus's mouth !
Do I need an RO filter to keep Discus?
No, all the Discus we supply are accustomed to and raised in UK tap water. It is essential the water is biologically clean, no ammonia, no nitrite, a stable pH, temperature 28 - 30 C. We do however recommend considering a DD HMA filter as this will clean the tap water and remove any chlorine / chloramine / heavy metals.
Best size aquarium ?
Although water quality is easier to maintain in big aquariums, Discus do best when they feel secure, four fish in 600 litres may well be skittish and constantly hiding, where as eight fish in 300 litres are very happy. As a guide 25 litres per adult fish is fine with regularly husbandry. I would say 180 litres is OK for juvenile fish, but an upgrade in a few months needs considering.
Are Discus hard to keep?
No, the domestically bred fish available in the hobby today are easy to keep so long as you follow the recommendations of the supplier, You will have better success knowing the basics of fishkeeping, so they are not a "first fish" for folk starting out in the hobby.
Wild caught Discus are demanding, very different to captive bred fish.
